Arunachal Macaque (Macaca munzala) is a recently describe endemic and Endangered species of primate. It is distributed in Western parts of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a high-altitude living macaque species
During our expedition in search of Red Panda, we also encountered several troops of Arunachal Macaque in Tawang district, between altitudinal range of 2000m – 3200m AMSL. So, we tried to find more evidences of Arunachal macaque and documented the activity of troops. As the name suggests, Macaca munzala, where, munzala is “monkey of the deep forest” as it is called by Monpa people in Arunachal Pradesh. Most of the troops we found in deep forest and seen avoiding human presence. But some of the troops have adapted to live around human habitation due to availability of the food. Due to this, they get in conflict with feral dogs and humans.
