Collared Falconet (Microhierax caerulescens) The cute panda amongst birds.
It is the smallest raptor found in the Indian Sub-continent. No more than the size of a Bulbul, it can be easily mistaken for a shrike.
It is a resident of the Himalayan foothills and the terai. In the picture, it can be seen in its favourite perch, atop a tall tree which serves as a foraging outpost. A very active predator, the Falconet has a wide range of diet, from as small as a butterfly, grasshopper to as large as a small bird.
I was fortunate to see a pair atop this tree while visiting the Jim Corbett National Park.
