White bellied sea eagle perched on Casuraina tree in Dapoli. Such tree plantations are called ‘suruche baag’ in Marathi. As it has become a habitat for such birds, it is an invasive species and very detrimental to turtle eggs. The roots of the tree are known to destroy sea turtle eggs underneath the sandy beach as they take up nutrition from them. They were introduced in India to mitigate coastal wind currents and aren’t native.
