Indian skimmers are tern like birds with a shorter upper mandible and a longer lower mandible. Mainly found in rivers and lakes, they have bright patches of white and black and orange beak making them difficult to miss. The skimmer population is observed to be decreasing day by day with around 6000 to 10000 birds remaining. Due to its decreasing population they are classified as VU (vulnerable) by IUCN. It is threatened by habitat loss and degradation, pollution and disturbance by humans.
