This is a much elusive and mysterious specie of Raptors called legge’s hawk eagle . Legge’s hawk eagle is often mistaken with its very closely related cousins Crested Hawk Eagle. The deep blackish brown plumage , the crest on the head added much to our ambiguity regarding its ID as we saw this bird for the first time . But the intricate design of the plumage under its wings with unstreaked buff coverts and the heavy horizontal streaks on its breasts and belly reveal that these are the new rare species of legge’s Hawk Eagle according to the newly conducted survey in 2008.
The remnants of these gigantic raptors are now found in parts of Ceylon, travancore and parts of nilgiris and are found to be much novice in their defense mechanism than their predecessors of the same race .
Yet another evening in the wild that just extrapolated our learning curve about the rare beauties that hover upon the forests of Nagarahole
