A Shaheen falcon, a sub-species of the fastest bird on earth, the Peregrine falcon.It breeds in the Western and Eastern Ghats and visit grasslands between June and September.The one in the picture is the ruthless young female hunter.What makes the bird special is the way it takes down the prey and its effortless hunting.I have witnessed 3 hunts in 4 days and my fellow birder witnessed around 40 kills in the space of two months.Few of its prey includes Indian Roller,Drongo,Cattle egret,Myna,Rufous treepie and its favourite Pond Heron.Eagerly waiting for the next season and hopefully it will rule the grassland again.
