The growing city, shrinking marshlands
The Pallikarani Marshalands in the city of Chennai is surrounded by highly concretised human habitation. The marshalands supports great variety of resident and migratory birds during winter. Due the mixing of saline waters from sea backwaters in the freshwater marsh waters fed by rains, the unique habitat is a pleasure for birdwatching of different sizes, shapes, beak structures, method of feeding. Albeit, one has to bear the stench of constantly burning garbage on one side and stinking water.
